Lftp is a powerful command line tool which supports FTP, HTTP, SFTP, FISH, TORRENT protocols for file and data transfer. As we can see it supports popular data and file transfer protocols. It uses GNU TLS or OpenSSL for SSL/TLS encryption. In this tutorial we will look installing and different examples with
lftp
.lftp
is provided Linux distributions from official repositories. We can install it for yum
based distros like Fedora, RedHAT, CentOS with the following command.another alternative is installing it into
apt
based distros like Debian, Ubuntu, Kali, Mint.lftp
provides very simple syntax. We can show syntax and help information with the -h
option like below.lftp
tool have very detailed configuration file. This configuration file can be used for specify alias, ssl configuration, proxy configuration, anonymous password, etc. Default path and name of the configuration file is /etc/lftp.conf
. We can print this configuration file like below. In order to edit this file we need root privileges.lftp
also provides an interactive shell like FTP connections. We just need to issue the lftp
command where we will enter to the interactive shell. Now we can start the action. We will connect to an FTP server with the
lftp
command. We just need to specify the protocol which is FTP in this case and the IP address or host name of the server. In this example we will connect to ftp.metu.edu.tr
.Another supported protocol is SFTP. SFTP is very similar with the FTP protocol. But the
S
makes the SFTP secure which means the network traffic is encrytpted with SSL/TLS. Other things are the same with FTP. In this example we will connect using sftp://
of IP address 192.168.1.1 .There are a lot of configuration about
lftp
. One of the most error prone configuration is SSL and SSL verification. As we know SSL certificates are approved by the authorities. But in some cases servers can use unapproved certificates. This will create following error. In order to prevent this connection error we need to turn of the SSL certificate verify. Following configuration line will disable SSL verification. This configuration line can be put into global configuration file
/etc/lftp.conf
or into user local configuration file ~/.lftp/rc
In corporate environment proxy is popular connection technology. In this case we need to specify the proxy configuration to the
lftp
. We will set proxy configuration by using bash environment variables. We can set HTTP proxy like below. This line should be put into global configuration file /etc/lftp.conf
or user local configuration file /~/.lftp/rc
.Although most of the time, we install RPM packages using command via the official or unofficial repository in Linux. However, it is not the only way, just like Windows on Linux too, we can directly download and install software packages using Redhat supported open-source tool called RPM Package Manager.
Today, here we will see how to use the RPM command to install RPM packages of CentOS or RHEL. Plus also we use YUM and DNF to install RPM packages. As CentOS 8 and RHEL 8 now support dnf too.
Today, here we will see how to use the RPM command to install RPM packages of CentOS or RHEL. Plus also we use YUM and DNF to install RPM packages. As CentOS 8 and RHEL 8 now support dnf too.
First, log in as root or a user with sudo rights on your Linux server. You can use the command: su
Now, download the software package you want to install. For example, here we are downloading the RPM package of PHP software from its official website. Let’s say the name of it is php-5.4.16-46.el7.x86_64.rpm

RPM Command to install packages
After downloading the RPM package, first, we show the RPM command to install it on CentOS or Redhat 8/7/6.
The command is:

For rpm force install just use the -f flag
So, in this way, we can simply use RPM command to install any rpm packages, however, it not resolve the dependencies of any packages require and gives error most of the time. If you have some packages that need some extra packages while installing it, use the YUM command shown in this article.

Furthermore, to see the total number of packages installed on your system in figures we can use a command:

Yes, we can use YUM to install RPM packages, the benefit of this command as told above, it has the capability to download & install the dependencies a software needs while installing it on CentOS 8/7/6 or RHEL 8/7/6 based Linux systems…
The command structure is:
Ethernet driver for mac os high sierra. yum install package-name

If you want to use the Yum to remove any installed package then instead of using install use remove in the command. In this way:
yum remove package-name
example:
Yum command to list all installed RPM packges
If you are comfortable with YUM, you can also use it to see the list of a total number of RPM packages installed on your system, currently.
Moreover, to see the total count of the installed software or packages use:
Use DNF to install RPM packages

Just like a yum package manager, dnf can be used to install RPM software along with the dependencies that particular package requires. It works the same as Yum even the syntax will also be the same, the only difference will be the command starts with dnf instead of yum.
Command structure:
dnf install rpm-package-name
Example: How to use it
Lftp Script Example
DNF uninstall command
Just like the YUM, to remove packages with DNF we also use remove instead of install in the syntax.
